A Hinkley Center funded Florida Poly study explored adjustments like removing the program\, boosting recycling\, excluding glass\, and targeting specific materials to understand their effects on residential waste management costs\, climate change mitigation\, and enhancing landfill space. \n  \n  \nRegional Community Anaerobic Digestion for Organic Waste Diversion Workshop –\nSpeaker: Daniel Meeroff\, PhD; Florida Atlantic University\, Sumaiya Sharmin\, Florida Atlantic University; Tanja Rauch-Williams\, Ph.D.\, Metro Water Recovery; and Ruth Spierling\, Los Angeles County Sanitation District \nBreakout Session Moderators: Daniel Meeroff\, Sumaiya Sharmin\, Lusnel Ferdinand\, Rakib Chowdhury\, and Fred Bloetscher \n  \nWorkshop Overview: \nThe workshop will convene a working group of key stakeholders to be informed about the results of the USEPA-funded Anaerobic Digestion for Organic Waste Diversion grant program at Florida Atlantic University (FAU). \n  \nStakeholders include state\, local\, and federal regulatory agencies\, engineering consultants\, water/sewer utility managers\, solid waste managers\, haulers\, private organics managers\, landfill gas users\, food waste generators\, research faculty\, and other key contributors. \n  \nThe session will introduce the grant funded research results conducted at FAU over the 3-year project period including experimental data and results of modeling and life cycle cost assessments. This will be followed by a highlight of opportunities and lessons learned from existing successful organics waste diversion projects\, and a speaker who will identify research gaps and possible future implementation projects to provide missing performance data for best management practices related to organics diversion from landfills to anaerobic digestion facilities. \n  \nAfter the presentations\, workshop participants will be invited to enter breakout rooms to address perceived legal\, policy\, or social barriers to implementation and identify additional strategies\, practices and performance measures that are currently not considered or lacking field experience. A summary report of the workshop will be produced by FAU.
