Wasted: How your recycling gets trashed

ORLANDO, Fla. —
Despite the intentions of well-meaning people across the state, Florida’s recycling efforts are being wasted because our recyclables are getting trashed.
It’s a daily dilemma in many households, and while it may seem like a mundane topic, it is a multi-billion-dollar business, impacting what taxes people pay and the future of the planet.
There are a few reason why Florida is “failing at recycling.”
The first, most people who recycle have no idea how the journey from the recycle bin all the way to the process of creating recycled materials works.
Another problem, many people assume they know what’s recyclable. They don’t.
And that’s leading to a mess at recycling facilities across the state. All that bad information creates pricey problems for municipalities, and people who want to buy the stuff that people throw away.
The result is that tons and tons of cardboard, glass, and metal that could be reused ends up sitting in a landfill instead.
